The Virginian (1962)
The Series
The Virginian (the title was changed to The Men From Shiloh in 1970) was a colour Western series starring James Drury, Ben Johnson, Doug McClure (Trampas), and Lee J. Cobb (Twelve Angry Men) as Judge Henry Garth. It was based on the 1901 novel by Owen Wister. As in the case of Bonanza and The High Chaparral a ranch (Shiloh Ranch) and a family (Garth) and their co-workers and friends took centre stage. This ranch changed hands three times during the series' run, with ownership passing first to the Grainger brothers and then to Col. MacKenzie. The titular character was the ranch's foreman, played by Drury. The show was set in the 1880s, and dealt with the conflict between the old ways and the encroaching new-fangled ways from the East. The series, which had 90-minute episodes, ran from 1962 to the end of the sixties, when it was cancelled. It returned in 1971 for one more season, with Stewart Granger (as Col. Alan MacKenzie).
